Pisgah Brewing Celebrates the 9th Annual Stout Hog Day with Mole Stout

Thursday, January 26th, 2017

Pisgah Brewing Company started their own holiday in 2009 when they decided to add a beer connoisseur’s twist to the nationally recognized holiday surrounding Punxsutawney Phil and his shadow, Groundhog Day. Traditionally beer lovers unite over the darkest and heaviest of craft brews as the temperatures drop, so the Pisgah brewers developed their own reason to celebrate with a glass full of stout, Stout Hog Day. The tradition has evolved over the years, now targeting Super Bowl Sunday as the setting for an early afternoon brewer’s breakfast with a wall full of dark beers.

Pisgah Brewing is unveiling a new beer for their holiday weekend on Friday, February 3rd in their taproom, the Pisgah Mole Stout. This robust brew combines a massive grain-bill of 5 organic roasted malts with brewer’s oats, then ages on raw cocoa nibs from French Broad Chocolate Factory, raw Madagascar vanilla beans, raw cinnamon and fire roasted Guajillo, Habanero and Anchillo peppers. Pisgah Mole Stout will be available in 22oz bottles in the Taproom starting at 2pm on February 3rd, and will remain on draught through the Stout Hog holiday weekend as well.

The 9th Annual Stout Hog Day will kick off at 12pm on February 5th, and will feature a taproom full of stouts and darks with some of Pisgah’s finest darker brews as well as a special collection of local and sought after stouts.  18+ of the Pisgah taps will turn into stouts or darker brews, 9 of which will be Pisgah’s own recipes. Included in the mix of Pisgah darks will be the GABF gold medal winning Chocolatized, Valdez, Mtn County Stout and the new Mole Stout.

The new Stout Hog Day tradition born in 2014 features the Brewer’s Breakfast, a full early afternoon of free pancakes for all (while supplies last) prepared by the brewers and staff themselves for their loyal fans.  The Mountain View BBQ food truck will also be on-site preparing breakfast additions for purchase to go along with the free pancakes. Music is always in the recipe at Pisgah Brewing, so the Stout Hog Day house-band Chalwa will bring the roots reggae vibes throughout the afternoon.

Pisgah Brewing Releases Winter 2017 Vanilla Porter in Bottles

Wednesday, January 18th, 2017

BLACK MOUNTAIN, NC – Pisgah Brewing Company has announced its plans for the 2017 Winter release of Vanilla Porter in 22oz bottles and on draught Thursday, January 19th in their taproom in Black Mountain, NC. The release will coincide with the January Thursday Residency with Black Mountain and Asheville natives, Hustle Souls, rocking the indoor stage at 6:30pm while the bottle release will begin at 2pm when the taproom opens to the public.

Pisgah Brewing has long been revered for their original Porter recipe – a smooth blend of five organic grains and malts balanced by single addition of whole-leaf Chinook and Nugget hops. The newest wintertime favorite, Vanilla Porter, features a beefed up version of the original Porter recipe that finishes on raw Madagascar vanilla beans before being put into bottles and kegs. The final product is a mildly sweet dark beer with seductive notes of vanilla on the nose and mild roasted coffee and chocolate notes left on the palate.

Pisgah Brewing Set To Release 2016’s Hellbender Barley Wine

Monday, February 29th, 2016

Pisgah is set to release their popular barley wine, Hellbender, which will generate $1 per bottle to Wild South and the hellbender research efforts

BLACK MOUNTAIN, NC – Pisgah Brewing Company is set to release their 2016 version of Hellbender, a barley wine ale brewed with organic grains and malts and whole cone hops, on Thursday, March 10th. As in years past, Pisgah will donate $1 per bottle to local non-profit and forest conservation leaders Wild South. The beer derives its name from the Eastern Hellbender salamander, a WNC treasure that is in danger of vulnerability due to pollution in our streams and watersheds. The release will kick off at 4pm with 22oz bottles available as well as draft pours, while music from The Screaming J’s and talks from Wild South representatives will begin around 6pm.

Hellbender barley wine was first brewed in 2008, when the brewery teamed up with Wild South in support of conservation efforts to protect a section of Pisgah National Forest in the Haw Creek Valley from being logged. Pisgah and Wild South continue to help fund research and foster awareness about the watersheds and streams that house the Eastern Hellbender. This smooth yet bold brew is caramel in color, using organic brown sugar and a modest blend of whole hops to provide the bold body and smooth aroma. Pisgah plans to release a limited amount of cases of the hefty 10.3% ABV barley wine at the taproom in Black Mountain, NC as well as participating bottle shops in Western North Carolina.

“We are thrilled to be working with Pisgah Brewing Company to protect our western North Carolina watersheds and wildlife,” says Dr. J.J. Apodaca, Wild South Chief Conservation Scientist and Warren Wilson College professor. “We need healthy forests and clean streams to make good beer, so this is a natural partnership for improving our regional ecosystem.”

For the past three years, Wild South has been working with Warren Wilson College to help the Eastern Hellbender population grow and thrive in North Carolina and beyond. We are employing a variety of conservation actions, from artificial habitat to innovative monitoring techniques and genetic analysis.

The hellbender requires clear, cool mountain streams to thrive, as they are particularly vulnerable to water pollution due to their permeable skin. Siltation from anthropogenic activities can also be particularly detrimental for hellbenders due to their unique reproductive habits. During breeding season, males become “den masters” guarding eggs in cavities under large flat rocks. Siltation can quickly fill these dens, suffocate eggs, and ultimately lead to a decrease in the local hellbender population.

Wild South and Warren Wilson College have deployed a unique way to help the hellbenders thrive despite disturbance of the western North Carolina watersheds. Since 2013, Wild South and Warren Wilson College has been building and testing “hellbender nest huts,” a man-made habitat that provides a den for the male and helps avoid eggs being enveloped by siltation. This spring and summer, researchers will be in the field placing the newest version of the huts that are engineered for the fast-flowing streams of the southern Appalachians. Thanks to this innovative program, Wild South and Warren Wilson College students will be helping the hellbender once again thrive in its native habitat.

Pisgah Brewing in Black Mountain, NC is set to release their award winning Chocolatized Vortex II (which will now only be known as Chocolatized) in 22oz bottles and on draft on Thursday, November 19th at their taproom. The VERY limited batch will only produce around 20 cases to be sold in bottle, so a pre-order has been set-up through Pisgah Brewing’s venue ticketing partner, TicketBiscuit. Bottles will be $12 each, and the release will begin at 6pm.

Chocolatized can be considered one of many unconventional beers made in Pisgah Brewing’s long history –a Russian Imperial Stout aged on raw cocoa nibs from French Broad Chocolate Factory of Asheville – and it brought home a Gold Medal in the Chocolate Beer category at The Great American Beer Festival in 2014. Rich notes of roasted malts, coffee and, of course, chocolate entice the palate for sip after sip, lending to a crisp bitterness and full bodied mouth-feel. Accompanied with a black color and perfect head retention, the 10-Year Anniversary edition of Chocolatized lives up to the occasion. Some of the 2015 batch made its way into bourbon barrels for aging, though details of that release have yet to be determined.

Bottle pre-sales will begin on Tuesday, November 17th at 10:00am ET. Purchaser’s credit card MUST match the person’s ID and must be 21 or older. No refunds will be given for underage purchases or unmatched credit cards or IDs. Pre-sale product must be picked up in person at the release.

Pre-sales can be found at the following link on Tuesday, November 17th at 10am ET:

It is hard to imagine that in 10 years of brewing some of the most notable craft beers of the WNC region, Pisgah Brewing Company will be releasing a first-time recipe in the form of a Double IPA on Wednesday, November 11th – but alas, the milestone is founded in truth. This hop-forward ale celebrates the philosophy of the Pisgah brewers, and will be packaged just hours before being released to the public to ensure maximum freshness.

Using nothing but whole-cone Citra and Simcoe hops, which is accompanied by a medium bodied grain-bill, the Pisgah DIPA boasts an 8.1% ABV and comes in at around 120+ IBUs. Once poured, the nose is immediately greeted with tropical notes of pineapple and grapefruit. A pleasant bitterness ensues moments later as this ale approaches the end of the palate, while the ale visually pleases with a medium-light color and appropriate head.

Pisgah Brewing plans to release the Pisgah Double IPA in 22oz bottles as well as on tap in their taproom in Black Mountain, NC on Wednesday, November 11th. Starting at 4pm, draft sales as well as bottle sales will be available to the public and currently no bottle limit has been set. Roughly 100 cases will make it to market between the taproom at Pisgah Brewing and participating accounts in Western North Carolina, while draft sales will primarily be at the brewery and select accounts only.

Pisgah Brewing Gets Funky w/ The Funky Meters, FATE and LEAF on May 16th

Wednesday, April 29th, 2015

Wednesday, April 29th 2015

Pisgah Brewing Company of Black Mountain, NC is no stranger to the funk: having welcomed such greats as Maceo Parker, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe and many more across the 6 years of Outdoor Stage shows in the brewery’s back yard and countless events in the taproom, Pisgah is a regular connoisseur of the New Orleans born genre. On Saturday, May 16th Pisgah will welcome The Funky Meters alongside Earphunk and George Porter Jr. and the Runnin’ Pardners for a festival-like daylong event on the Pisgah Brewing Outdoor Stage, and $2 from every ticket will go to benefit local non-profits Funding America Through Entertainment (FATE) and LEAF Community Arts.

The Funky Meters were birthed at New Orleans Jazz Festival in 1989, when an impromptu jam with The Meters’ founding members Art Neville and George Porter Jr., alongside Russel Battiste Jr., unearthed the soul and passion behind the music of one of the most important bands of the modern funk era. Though The Meters disbanded in the 80’s for business purposes, Art Neville and George Porter Jr. continue the legendary music with their current Funky Meters line-up including Brian Stoltz on guitar and Terrance Houston on drums. New Orleans’ newest sensation, Earphunk, joins the line-up in the midst of increasing national attention and an upcoming new studio album release. George Porter Jr. will also perform with his group, George Porter Jr. and the Runnin’ Pardners.

Like many events at the Pisgah Brewing Outdoor Stage, $2 from every ticket goes towards local non-profits FATE and LEAF Community Arts. The two local initiatives are some of Pisgah’s largest beneficiaries annually, FATE focusing on Hunger Relief in the communities they campaign, while LEAF Community Arts develops programming to support arts education and connecting cultures globally. “Since our founding 20 years ago, LEAF Community Arts has always held a deep passion for New Orleans music, art, & culture.  The rich and vibrant legacy of NOLA traditions remains a deep source of inspiration you can find at the heart of every LEAF Festival. We are deeply honored to team up with Pisgah & Fate to showcase these incredible New Orleans performers – Many of which have played at LEAF Festival before and will certainly return in the very near future…”

The event on Saturday, May 16th is $27 in advance, $32 day of sale and features a unique VIP package for $60 which includes a family-style New Orleans seafood boil, a guided brewery tour and tasting, private viewing area, private bar, event poster and more. Pisgah Brewing Company Celebrates 10-years of Craft Beer in 2015

Tuesday, February 17th, 2015

Western North Carolina and its economic and cultural hub, the City of Asheville, have long been in the newsfeed regarding the burgeoning craft beer scene that has exploded upon the region. To be recognized as a brand amongst the ever-growing sea of established breweries is nearly a right of passage, as public poll after public poll continues to highlight Asheville and WNC as a must-see destination for entertainment and fine brews. But it was long before this established status that David Quinn, founder of Pisgah Brewing Company, found himself searching for warehouse space to lease in the little town of Black Mountain.

Today, Pisgah Brewing Company stands out as a leader in the craft scene of WNC, as it’s flagship Pisgah Pale Ale has been unofficially considered one of the most recognized beers of the region. 2015 marks the 10-year anniversary of serving craft brews in Asheville and WNC for Pisgah Brewing Company, and that is reason enough for a multitude of celebrations planned for the year to commemorate the occasion. Pisgah’s anniversary is based upon it’s first keg sale, which occurred on April 13th, 2005 with its first keg of Pale Ale being sold to the downtown Asheville staple, Barley’s Taproom.

Though the celebration will last throughout 2015, Pisgah’s Anniversary Week will begin with Pint Night celebrations following the 10-year anniversary of their first keg sales back in 2005. Monday, April 13th will be a Pisgah Brewing pint night at Barley’s Asheville; Tuesday, April 14th will be at Mellow Mushroom; Wednesday, April 15th at Westville Pub; and Thursday, April 16th will feature a specialties night at Thirsty Monk Downtown Asheville. Each event that week will mark exactly 10-years from the first keg ever sold to the participating locations, as well as commemorate that those taps have flowed Pisgah Pale Ale since their first keg sale 10 years ago.

Pisgah will finish off the week with a party at the coveted Pisgah Brewing Outdoor Stage on Sunday, April 19th. The performers will be a round-up of some of Pisgah’s favorite performers from recent history, and will feature live sets from Leftover Salmon featuring Bill Payne, Pimps of Joytime, The Dead 27s and, Black Mountain locals, The Travers Brothership. Tickets will be $10 to commemorate 10-years, and the doors will open to the festivities at 2pm.

As if that wasn’t enough celebration, Pisgah Brewing has invited their brothers in brewing to help commemorate the occasion all year long as they embark upon 10 collaborations for 10-years. The list of confirmed beer collaborations includes Burial Beer Company, Wicked Weed Brewing, Asheville Brewing Company, Hi-Wire Brewing, Birdsong Brewing Company, Full Steam Brewing, Holy City Brewing Company, Fonta Flora Brewing and a special collaboration with the homebrewer’s club of Asheville, aka M.A.L.T. The 10th collaboration, deemed a special surprise, will be announced in the coming weeks. Pisgah’s first release of the 10-year Collaborations will be with Burial Beer Co featuring a new version of their 2014 favorite, Cemetary Gates, a Belgian-style IPA. The release will be held at Pisgah Brewing’s taproom on Wednesday, February 25th at 4pm.

Pisgah Brewing Co Plans A Funky Holiday Food Drive

Wednesday, November 19th, 2014

Pisgah Brewing Company of Black Mountain, NC is gearing up for one funky night of feel-good-vibes and legendary music with New Orleans great George Porter Jr. & the Runnin’ Pardners this Saturday, November 22nd. Pisgah will work in conjunction with local non-profit Funding America Through Entertainment (FATE) to organize a Food Drive event for local food pantry Manna Food Bank.

With Thanksgiving just around the corner, concert-goers will have an opportunity to spread the holiday cheer by donating food or money at the event towards families in need right here in Western North Carolina. An astonishing 1 in 6 Americans deal with issues of hunger, a statistic that rings true right here at home as well. “We’re excited that Pisgah continues to demonstrate their compassion for the community with efforts like this” says FATE Executive Director Josh Stack. “As the cold sets in, many families are being faced with difficult choice like heating the home or paying for food.”

Pisgah Brewing will also offer prizes to participants in the Food Drive, including a $25 gift certificate, brewery merchandise and a grand prize of (2) VIP passes to a concert of your choice on the Pisgah Brewing Outdoor Stage in 2015. Any and all non-perishable items will be accepted at the drive, and winners will be announced at set-break during the concert that evening.

Tickets for the George Porter Jr. & the Runnin’ Pardners event are $12 in advance and $15 day of show. Advance tickets are available online at

Pisgah Brewing Company set to release GABF Gold Medal Winning CHOCOLATIZED in 22oz Bottles 11/18/14

Tuesday, October 28th, 2014

Tuesday, October 28, 2014

Pisgah Brewing in Black Mountain, NC is set to release their award winning Chocolatized Vortex II (which will now only be known as Chocolatized) in 22oz bottles and on draft on Tuesday, November 18th at their taproom. The limited 5bbl batch will only produce around 40 cases to be sold in bottle, so a pre-order has been set-up through Pisgah Brewing’s venue ticketing partner, TicketBiscuit. Bottles will be $12 each, and the release will begin at 6pm.

It was much to the surprise of the Pisgah Brewers to have gotten a text from a fellow brewer marking that they had won a Gold Medal at the 2014 Great American Beer Festival (GABF). Held annually in Denver, CO, the GABF is considered the mecca of American craft brewing, and those that are awarded the coveted medals often make them a pedestal for marking their product among the elite in American craft beer.

Pisgah Brewing Company has often been deemed one of the treasures of the WNC region across the nearly 10 years of serving craft beer to the Asheville community, but their often-unconventional recipes have been more decorated in regional championships than the stiffly traditional judging found at national beer competitions. Thus it is only fitting that one of the more unconventional beers of Pisgah Brewing’s long history – a Russian Imperial Stout aged on raw cocoa nibs from French Broad Chocolate Factory of Asheville – brought home a Gold Medal in the Chocolate Beer category at GABF 2014.

The release will also feature a chocolate pairing from French Broad Chocolate Factory. A pair of chocolate raspberry truffles will be sold separate or with a flight of “Dirty Raz”, one of the Pisgah staff’s favorite flight pairings consisting of a flight each of Chocolatized and Framboise.

Bottle pre-sales will begin on Friday, November 14th at 10:00am ET. Purchaser’s credit card MUST match the person’s ID and must be 21 or older. No refunds will be given for underage purchases or unmatched credit cards or IDs.

Pre-sales can be found at the following link on November 14th at 10am ET:

Pisgah Brewing Company is teaming up with Wild South for an exclusive VIP package to accompany the already stellar Strings and Suds event on the Pisgah Brewing Outdoor Stage, to be held Saturday, June 8th.  The VIP package will include a multi-course dinner and pairing featuring special release brews and all-local farm-to-fork fair, as well as private viewing, private cash bar and more.  The Brewmaster VIP Package is $90, and will only sell 100 tickets to this exclusive event.

Pisgah Brewing Company offers an array of VIP packages with their larger events, and this is not the first time the brewery has featured such packages to benefit local non-profits.  “Pisgah has worked alongside Wild South for many years now with an array of events and promotions, and I think we really went over the top this time” says Benton Wharton, Events Director at Pisgah Brewing Company.  “Protecting our most natural forests, and more importantly our beloved watersheds, is a key issue in our community and something we take very seriously here at Pisgah Brewing”.

Ben Colvin, Development Director for Wild South, considers this “a prime example of locally minded organizations coming together in support of a common goal”.  Features of the multi-course meal and pairing will include Foothills Family Farms meats, selections from Sunburst Trout Farm, and a menu prepared by local catering artisans, Colorful Palate.  Pisgah plans to feature some of its yet-to-be-released barrel aged beers as well as some brand-new seasonal brews for the pairing as well.

The More Things Change, the More They Stay the Same

(BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C.) – Pisgah Brewing Company of Black Mountain, N.C., announces that it will no longer receive organic certification from the USDA National Organic Program (NOP) for its products.  Since its inception in 2005, Pisgah Brewing Company has been renowned for its organic beer selection, brewed with nothing but whole-leaf hops, all-organic grains and organic ingredients.   Pisgah Pale Ale is one of the most widely sold beers in the Buncombe County region, and the word “Organic” could be found on the brewery’s logo, labels, and brand.

In 2008, the USDA handed down to organic producers that their certification would no longer allow exceptions to the 100% organic rule for ingredients that are either not available in certified organic form, or not 100% certified organic.  This is mainly due to certain fertilizers or processes in packaging, and the USDA put a deadline in March of 2013 for participants to change their ingredients, or lose certification.  After 5 years of this debate, Pisgah Brewing Company has decided that it will not change its operations, ingredients or recipes in any way, thus forfeiting their USDA Organic Certification.

Aside from the organic certification, Pisgah Brewing products stand apart from a majority of operating breweries in their use of whole-leaf hops.  It is industry standard for hop pellets to be used in the brewing process, which are mashed and processed into small pellets, resembling something much like those used in wood smokers.  Whole Leaf hops are sealed and packaged as they are off of the vine, a tactic which craft brewing industry leader Sierra Nevada has used throughout their existence.

Dave Quinn, owner and creator of Pisgah Brewing Company and it’s many recipes, states, “nothing about our process will change whatsoever.  We will take the organic logo off of our labels, advertising and logos, and will remain the same Pisgah Brewing Company everyone has come to know and love.  We will brew with nothing but the finest and most locally sourced ingredients we can find.”

Pisgah Brewing’s doors remain open to the public daily, and patrons can be a part of one of the many brewery tours offered at Pisgah every Saturday afternoon to see their operations for themselves.

Just outside of Asheville—the four-time Beer City USA winner—Pisgah has become a local favorite for its terroir-driven brews, which utilize hops grown just minutes away at Hop’n Blueberry Farm. You can’t go wrong with the organic IPA, a citrusy and floral sipper brewed with six hop varieties. At 7.5% ABV, its dangerously sessionable, thanks to a kiss of malt sweetness that keeps the bitterness in check. If you’re in the area, check out one of the concerts regularly held on Pisgah’s grounds—they’re as good at partying as they are brewing!—AS
