Kendra Penland:
Kendra Penland is a genre-blending vocalist and multi-instrumentalist whose sound draws from the deep wells of soul, jazz, blues, country, and Americana. A North Carolina native now based in Asheville, Kendra grew up on a musical diet curated by her grandparents’ love of jazz and classic country, and her parents’ devotion to soul, R&B, disco, and rock.
She began singing jazz at 19, but life took her in another direction for a while—and for 15 years, music was on the back burner. Fortunately for all of us, she came back swinging. Since re-emerging, she’s stacked up backup vocal credits, shared the stage with legends like the Dirty Dozen Brass Band and The Funk Experience (featuring Spacey T. Singleton, Billy Bass Nelson, and Gary “Mudbone” Cooper), and co-founded the wildly fun cover band Melodic AF.
Kendra also helmed and curated a popular weekly music residency for two years, fronts and collaborates on multiple bands and special projects, and is currently finishing her debut EP Kitchen Songs—a heartfelt collection of originals written from (and often about) life’s messiest, warmest, most creative room.
Whether she’s belting out a soul classic, crooning a smoky jazz standard, or unveiling a new original, Kendra brings grit, grace, and a lot of groove.
