DETAILS

“Each year Family Reunion grows more and more while still maintaining the festival’s original concept,” says curator Marcus King. Family Reunion is about “bringing together our families – the brothers and sisters we’ve come to know on the road, for a weekend of breaking bread, making music, and fellowship. We hope to see all of YOU at the annual Family Reunion this year.”

Soulful rock explosion The Marcus King Band have announced the lineup for their third annual festival, The Marcus King Band Family Reunion, happening September 27 + 28, 2019 at Pisgah Brewing Company in Western North Carolina. For the initial lineup – alt-country pioneers Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit, americana troubadour Josh Ritter, fiddle-playing songstress Amanda Shires, indie rockers Futurebirds, plus Los Coast, and Charlie Overbey & The Broken Arrows join festival namesake The Marcus King Band performing two sets over the multi-day event.

The second wave of artist announcements include jamgrass stalwarts Yonder Mountain String Band, six-headed synth-wave beast Doom Flamingo, the uniquely gifted guitarist, singer, songwriter and producer Doyle Bramhall II, the feel good music of Andy Frasco & the U.N., and we also need some funk, so we’ll have the Nigel Hall Band and the Shady Recruits will be joining us as well. Rounding out the lineup are Asheville based acts, Mimi Naja (of Fruition) and local legend Josh Blake‘s Organ Trio (J.B.O.T.).

ARTIST INFORMATION

JASON ISBELL & THE 400 UNIT:
ARTIST WEBSITE  |  FACEBOOK  |  INSTAGRAM  |  YOUTUBE

Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit’s new album, The Nashville Sound, is a beautiful piece of American music-making, but watch yourself: it will light a fire under your ass. “You’re still breathing, it’s not too late,” Jason sings.

This album is a call, and the songs on it send sparks flying into a culture that’s already running so hot the needle on the temperature gauge is bouncing erratically in the red. And while it’s understandable that, in this moment, some people want their radio to help them drift away, this finely calibrated set of ten songs is aimed right between the clear eyes of people who prefer to stay present and awake. It’s a call to those who won’t cower no matter how erratically the world turns, and who aren’t afraid of what looks back when they look in the mirror. Bruce Springsteen did that. Neil Young did that. Jason Isbell does that.

THE MARCUS KING BAND:
ARTIST WEBSITE FACEBOOK  |  INSTAGRAM  |  YOUTUBE

Songwriter. Guitarist. Singer. Bandleader. At only 23 years of age, Marcus King has been writing songs and performing onstage for half his lifetime, delivering a southern fried brand of blues and psychedelia inspired by rock n’ roll. All five members of the band—drummer Jack Ryan, bass player Stephen Campbell, trumpeter/trombonist Justin Johnson, sax player Dean Mitchell and keyboard player DeShawn “D-Vibes” Alexander—create a blistering, yet soulful unit that has honed their synergy through endless touring.

King is a Blue Ridge Mountain boy, born and raised in Greenville, South Carolina. A fourth-generation musician, he traces his lineage back to his fiddle-playing great grandfather, while his grandfather was a fiddler and guitarist. His dad is Marvin King, is a singer/guitarist who has toured nationally since the ‘70’s with various artists as well as his own group, Marvin King and Blue Revival. Since he was a teenager, he’s been trading licks with famous fans and mentors Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks whenever their paths have crossed.

Marcus King doesn’t strive for authenticity, he never had to—it’s busting out of his DNA in every note he plays and every word he sings. This focused, firmly rooted artist isn’t just perpetuating the proud legacy of American rock and soul music; with the musically enthralling, deeply personal new album, Carolina Confessions, he and his great band are adding their own eloquent chapter to that rich narrative.

YONDER MOUNTAIN STRING BAND:
ARTIST WEBSITEFACEBOOK  |  INSTAGRAM  |  YOUTUBE

For the past 20 years, Yonder Mountain String Band has redefined bluegrass music, expanding the traditional acoustic genre beyond its previously established boundaries by steadily pushing the envelope into the realms of rock n’ roll and improvisation. YMSB—guitarist Adam Aijala, bassist Ben Kaufmann, banjo player Dave Johnston, Jacob Joliff on mandolin and violinist Allie Kral–has always played music of their own design, in the process attracting a devout following of fans that often resembles a tight-knit family on an epic musical journey as Yonder traverses the country with an ambitious tour schedule. Yonder is a quintessential ensemble honing its craft night after night on the road, and the fans are there to experience it in real time. The result is music that doesn’t stand still, it’s always progressing and breaking unprecedented ground.

JOSH RITTER & THE ROYAL CITY BAND:
ARTIST WEBSITE  |  FACEBOOK  |  INSTAGRAM  |  YOUTUBE

A guileless, boy-next-door voice belies the depth and ambition of Josh Ritter’s songs, whether he is confessing a simple crush or following his thoughts on a long, Whitmanesque incantation. -Ben Sisario, The New York Times.

Fever Breaks, the tenth studio album from acclaimed singer and songwriter Josh Ritter, will be released April 26th. Produced by Grammy Award-winning musician Jason Isbell, the 10-song record was recorded at Nashville’s historic RCA Studio A.

“It’s classic Ritter on Muscle Shoals-bred steroids” – Rolling Stone

AMANDA SHIRES:
ARTIST WEBSITE  |  FACEBOOK  |  INSTAGRAM  |  YOUTUBE

“It’s all rock & roll – no golf!” is how singer/songwriter/violinist Amanda Shires describes her electrifying fifth album, To The Sunset. She’s borrowed a lyric from the track “Break Out the Champagne,” one of ten deftly crafted songs that comprise her powerful new recording. The Texas-born road warrior, new mom, and recently minted MFA in creative writing has mined a range of musical influences to reveal an Amanda Shires many didn’t know existed. “Isn’t it refreshing?” Shires asks. Indeed. Distorted electric guitars, effects pedals, swirling keys and synths, and rockin’ rhythms certainly suit Shires’ visceral songcraft and lilting soprano.

DOOM FLAMINGO:
ARTIST WEBSITE  |  FACEBOOK  |  INSTAGRAM  |  YOUTUBE

Doom Flamingo is a six-headed synthwave beast with a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde element to the songwriting. Top Gun guitar riffs and Miami Beach poolside lounge-vibes, are all at once contrasted with eerie darksynth soundscapes reminiscent of old John Carpenter films.

Doom Flamingo came together organically through friendships and past collaborations in their hometown of Charleston, South Carolina. The sextet features bassist Ryan Stasik, of the prolific rock band Umphrey’s McGee, alongside a cast of powerhouse musicians. Dynamic vocalist, Kanika Moore, sets the project into hyperdrive.

DOYLE BRAMHALL II:
ARTIST WEBSITE  |  FACEBOOK  |  INSTAGRAM  |  YOUTUBE

What is it about Doyle Bramhall II, and why does everybody want to work with him? Since 2000, the uniquely gifted guitarist, singer, songwriter and producer has been practically joined to Eric Clapton’s hip as both an onstage and studio collaborator. In addition to Slowhand, other music greats have sought Bramhall’s distinctive talents: Roger Waters, T-Bone Burnett, Elton John, Gregg Allman, Allen Toussaint, Sheryl Crow, Billy Preston, Dr. John, Michael McDonald, Erykah Badu, Questlove, Meshell Ndegeocello – as it’s often said, the list goes on and on.

ANDY FRASCO & THE U.N.:
ARTIST WEBSITE  |  FACEBOOK  |  INSTAGRAM  |  YOUTUBE

It felt like time to switch gears.

In 2017, Andy Frasco reached a fork in the road. Renowned for a jubilant jambalaya of rule-breaking rock n roll his career kept rolling ahead at full steam. To date, he had released three independent albums, chronicled a German gig in front of 15,000 screaming fans on the recent live opus Songs from the Road, made jaws drop at festivals such as Grandoozy, Firefly, Mountain Jam, Summer Camp, Rock am Ring, Rock im Park and Electric Forest, generated millions of streams, launched Andy Frasco’s World Saving Podcast, and performed at festivals alongside icons such as Peter Frampton, Gary Clark Jr., The Revivalists, Snoop Dog, Dr. Dog, Joe Walsh and Kendrick Lamar, to name a few.

After a string of wild shows (and wilder nights) on tour somewhere in the heart of America, one morning sounded a very loud wakeup call for the singer, songwriter, performer, and namesake of Andy Frasco & The U.N.

NIGEL HALL BAND:
ARTIST WEBSITE  |  FACEBOOK  |  INSTAGRAM

Soul provider Nigel Hall is in many ways an artist who needs no introduction. An in-demand sideman, he’s built a mighty foundation of funk over the years onstage and in the studio with collaborators including the Warren Haynes Band, Jon Cleary, Soulive, Oteil Burbridge and Roosevelt Collier, Ledisi, the Soul Rebels, Lettuce and countless others. Legions of fans are already well in the know about Hall’s copious keyboard chops and powerful vocal style. But even to them, his Feel Music/Round Hill debut solo album will be a revelation – a confirmation that Hall has stepped out front and center into a creative space to call his own.

FUTUREBIRDS:
ARTIST WEBSITE  |  FACEBOOK  |  INSTAGRAM  |  YOUTUBE

The music is a patchwork amalgam of influences, including: twangy Southern rock (they’ve opened for the Drive-By Truckers), reverb-soaked psychedelia reminiscent of early My Morning Jacket or fellow Athens residents Phosphorescent, soaring guitar solos à la Neil Young and Crazy Horse, rhythmic jangle from that other Athens band, REM, multi-part vocal harmonies (which every band ought to have, dammit), and, weaving through it all, lyrical slide guitar. – Vox.com

LOS COAST:
ARTIST WEBSITE  |  FACEBOOK  |  INSTAGRAM  |  YOUTUBE

Los Coast is the brainchild of Trey Privott and John Courtney and is completed by Megan Hartman on bass, Damien Llanes on drumkit, and Nat Wright on keys. Together, their music is a punchy, psych-tinged, lyrical variety of rock and soul.
Los Coast formed like Voltron, and Trey happened to be the heart. He is Los Coast’s “Stax-worthy” vocal feature. To put it simply, “there’s something about Trey’s voice that resonates with you.” He was introduced first to jazz—by his uncle Hiram Bullock—but Trey’s musical enthusiasm embraces gospel, punk rock, folk, and hip-hop, among other genres, and his eclectic songwriting style reflects his catholic musical interests.
John is a multi-instrumentalist primarily featured as lead guitar. John’s style is rooted in experimental rock and modal jazz and heavily influenced by an appreciation of music theory developed studying mood, texture, and composition at Berklee College of Music.

The Shady Recruits is a Greenville, SC based “supergroup” led by drummer Jack Ryan from the Marcus King Band. The ensemble features musicians from other prominent local and regional bands.

CHARLEY OVERBEY & THE BROKEN ARROWS:
ARTIST WEBSITE  |  FACEBOOK  |  INSTAGRAM  |  LONE HAWK HATS

Charlie Overbey has been a staple in the Los Angeles Music scene since the early 90’s as a musician, a promoter and then spent years as a booking agent.  After the tail end days on the Sunset Strip with Big Bang Babies Charlie drifted back to his punk rock roots and Joined Cowpunk band Custom Made Scare, recorded their debut album with Side One Dummy records which came out immediately following a vacation in federal prison and later played with Deadbolt for many years and then Formed Charlie And The Valentine Killers who toured with David Alan Coe, The Supersuckers and more.

Charlie finally sobered up and started writing what would become the Broken Arrows EP~ The California Kid produced by Charlie and Mixed by Grammy Award Winner Ted Hutt ( Old Crow Medicine Show, Gaslight Anthem, Chuck Ragan, Dropkick Murphys and more) and Paul Kilmister who happens to be the Son of Lemmy.   Some heavy hitters such as Zander Schloss, Steve Soto, Colleen Duffy, Jonah Smith, Jake Margolis and Ted Russell Kamp recorded on the album.  After recording, Charlie then carefully constructed a band of Music Veterans and long time musician Friends that he had always wanted to play with that would be comfortable with heavy touring and would quickly mold into a Band of Brothers.

Jimmy James of The Hangmen, Lead man Dave James of The Superbees, Pedal Steeler Jordan Shapiro of The Supersuckers, Joe Ginsberg of Chuck Ragan and the wind brought in a new Cali arrival from Rhode Island, Drummer Charlie Nicienski.
Bassist Terry Love and Steeler J.C August have stepped in to help out with some of the heavy road work and conflicting schedules.

The band is touring and writing with plans of recording their debut full length LP later in the year with Ted Hutt Producing and Mixing.
It’s full steam ahead for this band of LA Music Vets!
